Global MBA Testimonials

The process of creating value through work-integrated learning is extraordinary. It shifts the primary learning experience from the confines of academic institutions to the actual workplaces of our students. This transformation leads to an unparalleled sense of purpose, as it transitions skills training from theoretical teaching to the invaluable experience gained on the job.

Additionally, work-integration redirects the traditional focus of study from analysis to practical implementation. It is the act of implementation that has the power to bring about real change in the world. This new approach enables students to realize their potential in effecting positive changes within their work environments.

We invite you to explore the remarkable feedback from some of our students who have been willing to openly share their experiences of creating genuine value in their workplaces.

With my technical background, this course has demystified some of the misconceptions I had on what a good and effective manager is. Also, this course has shown me the HOW bit of becoming an effective manager.

The assignment helped me putting my thoughts systematically together.

During my 20 years career, I have encountered many engagements and negotiations with international correspondents and businesses in which I found difficulties with one or more facets of miscommunications be it verbal or expressive that prevented me fr om reaching my desired outcome.  I never realized that the key contributor to such fatal error and hence in wrong communication behavior was a subject of the cross-cultural management.

I am therefore personally grateful that I was introduced to this course as it opened my eyes to a world wh ere cross cultural communication can make a vast difference. The assignment helped me in designing an action plan that will allow us to develop needed skills.

It was a very interesting experience studying this course as we had to think out of the box. It pushed me way out of my comfort zone. The aspects we are learning about here are mostly common issues that we're used to on a day to day basis, but the way they are presented is very deep and mind stretching.

It was a very enriching and exciting course for me. My company will surely reap great benefits from the lessons I got here. I had a discussion with our HR director on how we are managing our performance appraisal system in relation to the points I mentioned in this assignment, which I wanted us to implement. She expressed great interest in this global MBA programme as well.

Since I started more and more senior managers at Cimentos da Beira are getting interested and curious about this MBA programme. I hope that they will join as well in the near future.

In the past when we went to negotiations, the most important thing was to get the best deal possible in order to achieve the aspiration of the us.

Little did we know or realize that culture has an equal importance to the negotiations just as much as the actual terms and conditions of the agreements at the end. This has been a good lesson which will allow our management to prepare adequately for future negotiations, in terms of cultural differences.

This course has been an eye opener and a new awareness for me, while I knew that it is best to always take time and weigh options before making any decision, I was not aware that there is a scholarly thought around this subject and the amount of material on research that is available just on decision making.

Applying the course content at in our company, I noticed a fundamental shift in my thinking and how I view my colleagues or team members. I have benefited from writing this assignment even beyond work in my private life.

By going through this course, I have learnt that I do not need to be conventional in my thinking or way of doing things. As such I have learnt that I need to be confident and remain steadfast if am convinced that am doing something right.

The organisation therefore stands to benefit from my application of these principles as am certain that as I continue exercising these my performance will greatly improve as I guide my team, their thinking, their attitudes and their actions towards what the organisation needs – MAKING MONEY FROM NICKEL PRODUCTION!

One aspect that I discovered when applying the theory to my workplace and that was new and really added value to my management knowledge was the principle of utilising strength and not getting fixated on the employee’s weaknesses.

Before getting into the subject matter, for me, the thinking was if an employee/team member cannot do the job, or if you are not competent then it meant you did not deserve to be working in the organisation. It was more the reason to terminate contracts and find someone who is competent. I have fired a lot of people due to my ignorance to this principle.

Had I known better at that time I would have discovered different talents that might have been useful in the organisation from the employees fired.

This course really boosted my wisdom as it has totally changed the way I think and approach certain situations in life. As I was thinking of points to write in the analysis and recommendations section, I felt that all the wit I thought I had in me was put to challenge.

The tutorial for this course was very beneficial. The three presentations that were done were very different. It was really difficult to imagine that all these responses were derived from the same passage of text provided in the tutorial. This probed me to think deeper in order to understand exactly what learning outcome was expected of me in this module, and that is when my eyes were opened.

This course prompted me to do self-introspection in the way I conducted my responsibility as a manager. It also enabled me to identify weak points and their adverse impacts on my work and to identify opportunities for improvement. It showed me how we easily overlook the shortcomings of management, by magnifying issues that I often trivialised subconsciously, and helped me realise how intolerable they are considering the gravity of their impacts.

It greatly added value to me since I have now confirmed that management is not a talent we are born with, but a skill that is learnt and perfected through practise. I gained a lot of insights in this course about how to become an effective manager which was of immense personal value.

I am indeed personally grateful that I was able to take on this topic as part of my studies as it enabled me to read a lot on globalization impacts and trends and the latest global trends within financial services industry, specifically the Pension Funds industry.

I cannot wait to attempt the next course (Cross Cultural Management) as the Nature of International Business has taught me a lot about my business and globalization impacts and trends within the sector in which we operate.

For several years, I have been the finance manager. I have been involved in various exercises that analyzed the institution’s challenges. But my organisation has for so long ignored the effects of globalisation tackled in this assignment. It was considered far-fetched because we are limited to operate within our local borders. This assignment showed that every institution is operating in a global village and should assess risks on a global perspective.

Furthermore, it emerged that risks do not only emanate from the same industry, for example, in this assignment it was discovered that phosphate mining has dire consequences to our operation just as much as the direct competitors in the fishing industry.

This course has challenged my previously held notions on management at every turn.

I was hitherto of the strong view that it is a manager’s duty to ensure that their subordinates are happy at work and that if the subordinates are happy, this will translate into effective and efficient productivity. Now I have learnt that this is a slippery slope as it can divert focus and attention on the things that truly matter which are delivering effective and efficient value and results for the firm’s clients.

This course has not only exposed my bad management behavior but equipped me with the tools to get rid of that and adopt new behaviors of good management. I have always thought that there is a difference in leadership and management, however I now applying the course’s theory at my workplace, I hold a strong view that if good management is done right, it illustrates leadership.

This course was a bit challenging for me as I am not well acquainted with the subject matter. As such I had to do more reading. It was interesting to see the integration of the previous course content into this assignment and it helped me in not treating these in isolation but to see the value in real life applications.

From having undertaken this course, my employer will benefit from having a technical person who understands how to put up a business proposal. This ensures that the salient technical points are addressed from the onset and costed.

This assignment stretched me way beyond my comfort zone.

It touched an area I knew nothing about and opened my eyes to a completely new level of understanding. I tried to do the assignment myself at first using the literature provided, but I realised that it was imperative that I seek the help of very high-level people in my organisation, particularly the General Manager and Finance Director.

I was really puzzled to learn that some of the issues covered in this assignment were beyond the scope of our general accountants. Only three people in the entire business unit could articulate the information I needed with regards to the challenges foreign investors encounter when they go out to open business ventures in a foreign territory.

Our Finance director had interest in joining this MBA programme but was hesitant since he didn't believe it would add value to a person with his kind of profile. But when he noticed the depth of the questions I was asking him, it caught his interest and attention as he was very surprised by how the course deals with very practical things that businesses in the real world deal with on a day to day basis, which is a very different approach to the academic approach that other universities use.

One of the main benefits of this course was an opportunity for me to revise all that I have learnt so far in the first two courses and to see how the lessons from those modules tie in with this course. I have also learnt a great deal in putting together an investment proposal and my mind has been opened on the various factors that go into the making of a decision by a foreign investor as to whether or not to invest in a particular country.

As a legal advisor to many foreign investors, I am now better equipped to advise my foreign clients because I have a better appreciation of the broad range of issues that matter to them as they are conducting due diligences on target companies and target countries. I am also now better equipped to review preliminary information memorandums and requests for proposals by local businesses looking for foreign suitors. One of the areas I was hitherto not very knowledgeable in is taxation. This course has provided a foundation for me to comprehend basic taxation aspects. Overall, it has been a worthwhile course.

This course opened me up to the diverse international cross cultures.

There were certain behaviors that I would sometimes see in people but did not understand what they meant. However, this course enabled me to close business culture gaps since I now have the knowledge of different cultural behaviors.

In addition, through what I have learnt, I think there will be a minimization of blunders on my part when dealing with people from different cultural backgrounds. From having undertaken this course, my employer will benefit from having an official who is aware of the impact of cultures and one who can be counted on to stand in the gap when there is need to guide international negotiations.

I  was quite intrigued by this course which made me discover that it is actually possible to define how and explain why cultural differences exist! This helped me understand exactly why certain people behave and in a particular way. I used to think that the way people think and behave is so diverse, random and inexplainable to such an extent that one can never systematically understand human behaviour.

There are peculiar behavioural traits that I observed in foreigners I interacted with, which I could not decode their meaning. But now through this course I have learnt how to interpret human behaviour much better and I now know how to respond properly.
